What Most Free PDF Redaction Gets Wrong
Most tools that advertise free PDF redaction draw a black rectangle over the text. The rectangle is an annotation layer sitting on top of the page, and the original characters stay in the PDF content stream underneath it. Anyone who selects the area and copies it, opens the file in a different reader, or runs a text extraction command gets the text back. This tool removes the detected text from the content stream rather than covering it, so the characters are not recoverable from the file you download. You do not have to take our word for it. The distinction matters most on anything headed for a court docket. Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 5.2 requires Social Security numbers, dates of birth, financial account numbers, and the names of minor children to be redacted from public filings.
